Volunteer Coordinator – Ashburton Park
Service Area: Parks Service
Location: Croydon
Contract Type: Fixed Term (3 years) Part time
Salary: Grade 8
Hours: 30 per week
About the Parks Service and Strategic Objectives
Croydon Council’s Parks Service is central to the borough’s vision of fostering inclusive communities through the regeneration of public spaces. This includes protecting heritage assets and promoting environmental stewardship. As part of this mission, the service is leading the “100 Years of Ashburton Park” project, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. This initiative seeks to restore Ashburton Park’s historic character, improve biodiversity, and strengthen community involvement.
The role of Volunteer Coordinator is vital in ensuring this project achieves its full potential by embedding volunteering into the fabric of the park's future and aligning with the Council’s broader goals of sustainability, cultural enrichment, and social inclusion.
About the Role
The Volunteer Coordinator will lead on recruiting, training, and supporting a diverse range of volunteers to participate in and deliver meaningful activities that contribute to the park’s heritage and ecological transformation. This includes facilitating volunteer-led events, supporting community gardening and heritage tours, and engaging schools and local groups in educational programmes.
The postholder will develop systems to track volunteer engagement and evaluate impact, working closely with the wider project team to ensure volunteer contributions align with project goals. This role combines practical project delivery with strategic planning and plays a key part in building community ownership of the park’s future.
About You
You will bring proven experience in volunteer coordination, ideally within a heritage, community, or environmental context. Strong interpersonal and organisational skills are essential, along with the ability to manage partnerships and support diverse volunteer groups. You should be proficient in IT systems, including social media and data tracking tools, and knowledgeable about safeguarding, governance, and best practices in volunteer management. An understanding of heritage conservation or biodiversity is advantageous.
The role requires flexibility, including occasional evening and weekend work, and a firm commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.
